Understanding those worlds starts at the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Our Programs In addition to a strong foundation in physics and astronomy, students develop problem-solving and analytical skills that employers in and adjacent to the sciences value. Our undergraduate and graduate programs build those skills though transformational learning experiences and hands-on research opportunities. Our Research We concentrate our research in eight key areas, offering undergraduate and graduate students opportunities to uncover new clues that help us understand our world. Our People Our vibrant, internationally recognized faculty pursue world-class research on and off campus — and, using tools such as the Hubble Space Telescope, into the outer reaches of our galaxy. Melton Memorial Observatory Researchers, students and the public can observe the cosmos from the 16-inch Cassegrain telescope at the Melton Observatory, located near the historic Horseshoe. Seminars and Colloquia Our Department hosts both seminars and colloquia, often on a weekly basis, where speakers from all around the World are invited to present their work. Recent Faculty Awards The Department of Physics and Astronomy is proud to announce the following faculty awards: Dr. Frank Avignone was awarded the 2023 USC College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Faculty Award. Dr Timir Datta was named a 2022 Fellow of the American Association for Advancement of Science. Dr. Ralf Gothe was awarded the 2023 Breakthrough Leadership in Research Award . Dr. Varsha Kulkarni was awarded the 2023 USC Educational Foundation Research Award for Science, Mathematics, and Engineering. Staff Award Congratulations to Beth Powell for being awarded the 2nd place 2023 Staff Senate Outstanding Staff Award. The Staff Senate award is designed to recognize outstanding staff for their dedication to advancing the mission of our university and serving the community at-large. The award is given "based on exceptional contributions to USC, fellow employees, and the community."
